Backing up SkySync

When preparing to upgrade/reinstall/migrate a SkySync instance, it's always wise to backup your configuration files.
This can prevent a lot of headaches and hassles later on.

Important Directories:

  • <Install Volume>:\ProgramData\PortalArchitects

  • <Install Volume>:\Program Files (x86)\SkySync

Step 1) Backup all of the files with the ".config" file extension, within "\Program Files (x86)\SkySync":

  • appsettings.config

  • connections.config

  • migrate.exe.config

  • skysync.exe.config

  • skysyncservice.exe.config

Step 2) Backup the "Data" and "License" directories within "\ProgramData\PortalArchitects\".

Step 3) Once the maintenance to SkySync is complete, and both the SkySync app and services are not running, place the saved files into their respective folders.

Step 4) Restart the SkySync Service

  1. Open the Windows Services menu. (You can hit the left-hand Windows key and "R" keys together and type in "services.msc" in the run field.)

  2. Right-click on the SkySync service.

  3. Click Restart.

Single Node Upgrade

Upgrading SkySync is relatively simple and should be prompted automatically, in general you should receive a prompt to update once a month with a major release every 6 months. If you have a specific arrangement regarding your SkySync installation then your schedule may vary. If you are concerned that it has been too long since your last upgrade please contact support or our services team for assistance.

1. When opening SkySync you should receive a prompt to download the newest version

2. Clicking yes will download the upgrade, close SkySync, and immediately begin installing upgrade once the download is complete.

3. Click next or Upgrade depending on your installation

Depending on the install you may be prompted to confirm some information. Example of this is the Windows User ID if the non authenticated user option is being used

4. Once the upgrade is completed re-open SkySync to confirm functionality

Windows Defender Warning

It is possible when installing SkySync, that you will receive a message from Windows Defender blocking the install. This message can be manually bypassed by expanding the More Info.

This is not a cause for alarm and should stop happening in the near future. Some of our newer features resulted in the security system identifying us as a potential threat in their latest versions. Unfortunately we do not have a time frame for when the warning will stop occurring, but as mentioned it should not be the cause for alarm.

Multi node upgrade

It is important to ensure that you understand how your nodes interact with each other before starting this process. If you are updating multiple clusters you will want to upgrade them separately. For example if you have 2 Clusters of 3 nodes, you will want to upgrade all 3 nodes of he first cluster, before upgrading the 3 nodes of the second cluster.

1.Close and re-open the application on any node. You will be prompted to download the updated software installer. Select "Save for later" and download the installer.

2. Stop the SkySync service.

3. Run the installer on the first node.

Depending on the install you may be prompted to confirm some information. Example of this is the Windows User ID if the non authenticated user option is being used

4. Start the application on the first node to ensure the upgrade completed without error. Note that you will receive an error about job service connectivity as the service is stopped.

5. Run the installer on the rest of the nodes. Start the application on each to ensure the upgrade completed.

6. Start the SkySync service.

7. Restart the application on each node to ensure connectivity to the job service.
