Overview

Advanced filters allow you to build complex filter criteria using rules and groups. If you have applied basic filters or refinements to the Results grid, your selections will be automatically added to the advanced filters. You can remove these filters and refinements or build on them.

Understanding Advanced Filter Components

Advanced filters consist of three components: combinators, rules, and groups.

Combinator

The combinator allows you to combine or connect multiple criteria or conditions to refine the results of a filter. They specify how the criteria or conditions are related to each other. AND is used when all criteria must be true, while OR ensures that at least one of the criteria is true. You will set the combinator for every group added to the advanced filters.

Rule

A rule is a specific criterion added to a filter. Adding rules works the same as using the Refine option. Select the entity, choose the operator, and specify the value. You can add multiple rules, but the combinator determines how they are used to filter.

Group

Groups enable complex filtering by combining multiple criteria within a single filter. A new group serves as a set of parentheses in a query. Because each group uses separate combinators, rules, and additional nested groups, they allow you to define more complex conditions that control the order of evaluation and ensure precise filtering.

Sample Filters

The following filter examples illustrate how to use the criteria to build simple and complex filters. It utilizes one group comprised of three rules. There is one combinator since there is one group. The AND combinator indicates that all three rules must be met for an item to be included in the filter. The filter query is displayed on the right to help you understand how the filter combinator, rules, and grouping are applied.

The sample filter below is similar to the sample above but uses the OR combinator. In this sample, any rule can be met for an item to be included in the filter.

The sample below shows a filter with nested groups of rules. The top-level combinator is set to OR, meaning an item can match any group to be included in the results. Each subgroup uses the AND combinator for the group rules, so an item must meet all rules within the individual group to be a match. For example, to be considered a match for the first group, an item must contain an address, a person’s name, and a US phone number.

When applied, the advanced filter above translates as follows.

Adding Advanced Filters

Click Advanced Filter.
Select the main combinator you want to use.
Click + next to Rule or Group based on what you want to add to the filter.
For a rule, select the entity type, choose the operator, and enter the value you want to use. You can quickly locate an entity using the typeahead feature. Start typing, and you will be taken to the first entity that matches.
For a group, select the combinator. All rules added to the group will use this combinator.
Continue adding groups and rules as needed based on the filter you want to create.
You can clone a rule or group by clicking the Clone icon at the end of the row.
Use the drag handle to move a group or rule to another section.
Click the Delete icon next to a rule or group card to remove it.
Click Apply when you are finished configuring the filter.
The filter is translated into query language and displayed for reference.
